Adding Your First Wine

There are several ways to add wines in OENARI. You can add them one at a time — to your cellar, as a tasting, or to your wishlist — using the FAB button. Or you can bring in your entire existing collection at once via Import.

Add a Wine to Your Collection

This is for wines you own — bottles in your cellar, your kitchen, or on their way to you. Tap the FAB button and choose Add wine. OENARI asks how you want to find the wine:

  • Search manually — type the wine name, producer or vintage and pick from the results. The database holds more than 183,000 wines.
  • Scan wine label Supporter — photograph the front label, and the back label if you like. OENARI reads producer, name, vintage, grapes and more, and looks for the matching wine. You can also scan the barcode along the way, or skip it.
  • Scan barcode Supporter — point the camera at the barcode on the bottle. If OENARI knows the barcode, tap Add this wine.

Try scanning for free

From OENARI 4.2.1 a Free account gets 5 label scans and 5 barcode scans to try — in total, not per month. The badge on each option shows how many are left. A barcode scanned as part of a label scan doesn't count separately.

The two scan options need the phone's camera, so they are in the mobile apps only. On the web, use search.

Label scanning

  • Tap Cancel to leave the scanner, even before you have taken a photo.
  • If a label can't be read, OENARI tells you why — for example that the photo was unclear. Try again with the label filling more of the frame, or search by name.
  • Each month includes a number of enhanced scans. When they are used up, a scan gives a simpler, basic reading, and OENARI tells you so. They reset on the 1st.

Can't find your wine?

If a search finds nothing, OENARI says so. You can then Scan label to create the wine from its label, or Create new wine and fill in the details yourself: producer, wine name, country, region, subregion, appellation, classification and, optionally, the designation of origin (AOP, DOCG, VQA, Prädikatswein …). Then choose colour (red, white, rosé, orange or amber), style (still, sparkling, dessert or fortified), alcohol, bottle size and grapes.

Vintage, price and the rest

Once the wine is found, fill in:

  • Vintage — or Non-Vintage (NV) for Champagne, Port, Sherry and other NV wines
  • How did you get this wine? — purchased, gift, inherited, trade, own production or other
  • Price, Quantity, Vendor and Purchase date (starts at today)
  • In wine portfolio Premium — follow the bottles as investments. With a quantity above one, each bottle is followed on its own. See Wine Portfolio.
  • Receipt / certificate Premium

Prices and alcohol can be typed with a comma or a point — 13,5 and 13.5 both work.

Tap Add wine.

Place the bottle

With Supporter or Premium, OENARI then offers to place the new bottles in your cellar: pick a module and a slot, or tap Auto-place all. You can also tap I'll place them later.

On Free, bottles you add are not placed directly — place them from the rack instead. See Your First Cellar.

Tip

You don't have to place the bottle in a slot right away. You can add it to your collection first and give it a cellar position later.

Record a Tasting

For any wine — from your cellar, at a restaurant, at a friend's house or a wine event. Tap the FAB button and choose Taste wine.

Search for the wine by name. If it isn't in the database, scan its label or add it as a new wine, and you come straight back to the tasting note. OENARI supports structured notes with WSET-style evaluation Supporter. See Taste Notes for the full guide.

Add to Your Wishlist

Spotted something you'd like to buy later? Tap the FAB button and choose Add to Wishlist. Search for the wine by name and save it with an optional vintage, target price, priority and note.
