Public Profile & Privacy

OENARI 4.0 adds a social layer. This page explains exactly what becomes visible when you take part — and what never does. The short version: nothing is shared until you activate a profile, and even then your cellar stays private.

Before You Activate

By default you have no social profile. You are invisible to other users: nobody can find you, follow you, invite you or read anything you write. Your tasting notes are private and only your anonymous OP score contributes to the community average.

You can use every part of OENARI — cellar, notes, statistics, import — without ever activating a profile.

Activating a Profile

  1. Open Profile → Settings → Privacy.
  2. Under Social profile, tap Create profile.
  3. Choose a handle and tap Activate profile.

You can also activate from your own profile page — it shows an Activate profile prompt until you do.

Your handle

Your handle is the only identity other people ever see — no first name, no last name, no display name.

  • Lowercase letters, numbers and underscores.
  • Unique across OENARI, case-insensitively. Cellar_Rat and cellar_rat are the same handle.
  • Accented letters are transliterated rather than rejected: Nybörjare becomes nyborjare.
  • Handles that suggest official status (for example oenari, admin, support) are reserved.

Pick a handle that is not your name

Nothing stops you from using your real name as a handle, but you don't have to. Collectors have been targeted after revealing valuable bottles. A handle that is not searchable back to you is the safer default.

Private or Public Account

When you activate, your account is private. You can switch at any time in Profile → Settings → Privacy → Public account.

Private account (default) Public account
Others can find you by handle ✓ ✓
Following you You approve every request Anyone follows instantly
Notes shared with followers Visible only to people you approved Visible to anyone who pressed follow
Notes marked public Visible to everyone Visible to everyone

The difference matters for one thing: notes you share with followers. On a private account that is a real boundary — you decided who is on the other side of it. On a public account anyone can press follow and read them. The app warns you about this when you switch.

What Others Can See

On your public profile page:

  • Your handle, avatar and bio.
  • Your taste profile — favourite grapes, style and region — if you filled them in.
  • Achievements you chose to show. Bottle Collector, Acquirer and Connoisseur are never shown, because their level would reveal roughly how many bottles you have. See Achievements.
  • Counts: number of published notes, number of countries you have tasted from, number of tastings you took part in.
  • Wine clubs you are a member of (public clubs only).
  • Tasting notes you set to public — and, for approved followers, notes set to followers.

What Is Never Public

There is no setting that changes any of these:

  • Purchase prices — never shown anywhere outside your own account.
  • Bottle count and cellar value — your profile shows how many notes you published, not how many bottles you own.
  • Where bottles are stored — racks, slots and external storage are yours only.
  • Note locations — if you tag a tasting note with a location, the coordinates stay private. Countries appear on your profile as a count, not a list.
  • Your e-mail, name and membership tier.
  • Your wishlist.

Profile aggregates are derived from notes you chose to publish and sessions you took part in — never from your cellar.

Per-Note Visibility

Every tasting note has its own visibility, set when you write it and changeable afterwards:

  • Private — only you. The OP score still contributes anonymously to the community average.
  • Followers — people you follow-approved (or, on a public account, anyone who follows you).
  • Public — visible in the Community feed and on your profile.

See Taste Notes.

People who can read a note you shared can have it translated into their own language. The translation follows the same visibility as the note, and it is discarded when you edit the note. See Translating a Note.

Turning the Profile Off

Profile → Settings → Privacy → Turn off profile deactivates the social side in one step:

  • every public or followers-only note becomes private,
  • every follower is removed,
  • you can no longer be found.

Your handle is kept, and you can activate again whenever you like.

Exporting Your Data

Profile → Settings → Privacy → Export my data downloads everything OENARI stores about you as a JSON file — account, profile, membership, bottles, notes, consumption, wishlist, cellar structure, tags, follows, blocks, reports, sessions, scores, notification settings, devices, and a per-event summary of usage analytics. See GDPR.
